Considering Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. This surgery is often chosen by individuals who have large and heavy breasts, which can cause physical discomfort, pain, and aesthetic concerns. Here are some key points about breast reduction surgery:

  1. Procedure: During breast reduction, a plastic surgeon removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size of the breasts. The nipples and areolas may also be repositioned to a higher location on the breasts for a more proportional appearance.

  2. Candidates: Ideal candidates for breast reduction are individuals with breasts that are disproportionately large, causing physical discomfort such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, and skin irritation. They should also have realistic expectations and be in good overall health.

  3. Incision Options: There are several incision patterns used in breast reduction surgery, including the anchor-shaped incision (inframammary fold, vertical, and around the areola), the vertical incision (lollipop-shaped), and the horizontal incision (around the areola and in the inframammary fold). The choice of incision depends on the degree of breast reduction required and the surgeon's recommendation.

  4. Breast Size: Breast reduction surgery can reduce breast size significantly, but the amount of reduction can be tailored to the patient's preferences and physical needs.

  5. Combination Procedures: In some cases, breast reduction can be combined with a breast lift to achieve a more youthful and shapely breast appearance.

  6. Recovery: After breast reduction, patients may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Following post-operative care instructions, including wearing a surgical bra and avoiding strenuous activities for several weeks, is important.

  7. Scarring: Breast reduction leaves scars, the appearance of which can vary based on the incision type and individual healing. Over time, scars typically fade and become less noticeable.

  8. Consultation: It is important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon if you are considering breast reduction. During the consultation, your surgeon will assess your goals, discuss your breast anatomy, and provide you with information about the procedure and potential outcomes.

  9. Risks: Like any surgical procedure, breast reduction surgery carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, changes in nipple sensation, and complications related to anesthesia. Your surgeon will discuss these risks and the steps taken to minimize them.

Breast reduction can provide significant relief from physical discomfort and create a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing breast shape. Patients should have a thorough discussion with their surgeon to understand the procedure, potential outcomes, and any concerns they may have before deciding to undergo the surgery.

Breast Reduction for Women–and Men

It’s not just women who benefit from breast reduction. Male chest liposuction or gynecomastia removal reduces excess fat tissue on a man’s chest to produce a flatter, more masculine appearance.

According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, up to 50% of men in the United States may have enlarged breast tissue, or gynecomastia. This condition occurs at any stage of life and may be caused by genetics, medical conditions, medications, or weight gain. In some cases, the cause isn’t known. But gynecomastia is more common than many people imagine.

Male chest liposuction offers a less invasive alternative to reducing breast size in men. Dr. Bruggeman can discuss with you the alternatives for reduction, including general or local anesthetics, liposuction, or other breast reduction procedures that may be right for you.
